Anthony Davis Memes

Sports is a contemporary medium for performing many tasks and carrying multiple messages, with some form of conversation occurring with sports as the centrepiece or some kind of athlete-endorsed product being consumed, within work places, educational institutions, social gatherings and so on (Rowe 2004, 3). This constellation of institutions and practices that supplies the means by which messages involving sport are communicated is not restricted to conventional marketing methods. ‘Data’ about sport are all around, with seemingly every animate and inanimate object capable of function as a medium of sports culture. This notion is evident in the increasingly online trend of memes.  A meme acts as a unit for carrying cultural ideas, symbols or practices, which can be transmitted from one mind to another through writing, speech, gestures, rituals or other imitable phenomena.

Internet memes refers to a concept that spreads via the internet, largely through email, blogs, forums, social networking sites and video sharing sites such as YouTube. Ideas for internet memes may take shape in the form of videos, websites, hashtags, phrases and pictures. An internet meme may remain the same or may evolve over time, through commentary, imitations and parody. They can evolve and spread rapidly, at times reaching world-wide popularity trends.

Below are memes concerning Anthony Davis. The 1st overall pick of the 2012 NBA Draft is considered by many industry experts and fans as one of the best basketball talents in recent years, trends of meme creations regarding Davis range from his facial appearance, speculations over which team may draft him, to crossing over pop cultural references such as image stills from popular television drama Game of Thrones, to portray the situation. Wholly they signify an often shifting, hardly ever fixed, cultural actuality wherein the expectations and knowledge of contemporary fan groups are played out.
